A significant fire has erupted in Blackwall, engulfing a 13-story building that housed approximately 200 lead-acid batteries. Early this morning, just before 5 AM, flames broke out in the basement battery storage room of a data center located on Nutmeg Lane, east London.
Dozens of firefighters have been deployed to combat the blaze, with teams arriving from several fire stations including Poplar, Millwall, Plaistow, Stratford, East Ham, and Greenwich. The London Fire Brigade has confirmed that the fire has destroyed all the batteries stored in the facility.
At this point, the cause of the fire remains under investigation, leaving many questions unanswered regarding what might have ignited such a fierce blaze in a place storing a substantial quantity of potentially hazardous materials.
This incident raises important safety concerns about the storage of large quantities of batteries and other dangerous goods within urban environments. As details are still emerging, it will be interesting to see how local authorities address these issues moving forward.
